Medicinal benefits of Madagascar Periwinkle

Name of the herb -: Madagascar Periwinkle. Nithyakalyani in Tamil.

Plant name -: CATHARANTHES ROSEUS, VINCO ROSEA.

Plant Family -: APOCYNACEAE.


Other names -: graveyard flower, Cemetery flower, Periveenkil Madukkarai, Marukkalangaya, etc.

Varieties -: White-flowered, Purple flowered, and Nirmal (white-flowered variety: from CIMAP) are the three types of periwinkle. ‘Nirmal’ and ‘Dhawal’ are the released cultivars of the white-flowered type.

Useful parts -: Leaves, flowers, stems, and roots.

Habit: The origin of the Periwinkle is Madagascar. It is also widespread in Indo-china, Indonesia, Israel, the Philippines, South Africa, and the United States. It grows well on sandy soils and barren lands. Grows in all soils except alkaline land and mangrove forest. In India, it is cultivated in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Gujarat. Cultivated in barren lands in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, and Perambalur districts of Tamil Nadu.

This species is endemic to Madagascar and the plant is endangered in today's environment. The reason for this is that the ecosystem is being destroyed by deforestation and burning.

It also has white or pink flowers with five petals (1 inch to 1.5 inches). Its leaves are ordered in such a way that alternatively layered. It can grow up to 2 or 3 feet in height. Its leaves are bitter so cattle do not eat them. It blooms in all seasons. It grows all over Tamil Nadu. It is grown in gardens as an ornamental plant. It has been cultivated commercially for a long time. The seeds are mixed with sand and sown for rainfed and fallow cultivation. The leaves are plucked, processed, and exported during the 6th, 9th, and 12th months of the plant. Then in the 12th month, the plant is cut at ground level and the roots are plowed and processed, and sent for trade.

The leaves are exported to the United States and Hungary, and their roots to West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Medical Benefits -: Periwinkle can be used as a medicine to balance nerve activities and reduce urinary sugar. It is used in the manufacture of beauty products. It can cure high blood pressure and mental illness. Diseases that occur during menstruation are cured.
The 100 alkaloids in it are almost drugs. Among them, vincristine and vinblastine are anti-cancer drugs. Rare content and even Ajmal in it are important.

This crop is important in the business of medicine because of the low production of the herb Rauvolfia Serpentina and Madagascar Periwinkle provides the main medicinal chemicals.

Distill five flowers in half a liter of water and boil till it becomes a quarter-liter. Give this water 4 times a day to cure excessive urination, urinary incontinence, weakness, extreme hunger, and loss of appetite.

Make the Madagascar Periwinkle root powder and give 1 to 2 pinch with hot water to lower the urine sugar. The disease is controlled.

This Madagascar Periwinkle can cure poisonous fever and chronic fever.

Cancer can also be cured with a medicine made from Kalyani leaf. For this, put all the leaves, stems, and roots of Periwinkle in water and boil it well. When it becomes half, add honey to it and drink 20 ml in the morning and evening.
