Crabs typically have two large toes and 4 pairs of legs that help them walk, with a total of ten legs. The claws of crabs, also known as pincers or chelipeds, are useful to crabs in many ways. By tapping these claws, one crab communicates with another crab. These claws are used to break the shells of oysters. Sometimes the claws serve as a scissor and sometimes as a Japanese chopstick, a stick used to pick up food. This bite, which is also a weapon of the crab, grows back if it is broken.

Crab shell is made of calcium carbonate. This shell protects the crab's spongy body. Crab shells do not grow after a certain period of time. Thus, it is imperative to remove the shell as the crab grows. This shedding of shell is called molting.

Male crabs molt 6 to 7 times in the first year of life. After growing, it is enough to molt twice a year. Crabs live in hiding until the old shell is shed and a new shell grows.
